What is self-service BI?
Self-service BI is a way of working in which users create their own reports and analyses on governed data, without needing a BI specialist for every question. Clear agreements on data sources and definitions prevent multiple versions of the same figure from appearing.
Self-service BI explained
With self-service BI, a BI team builds the foundation: a data warehouse, approved data sources and agreed definitions. Users then create their own charts, filters and overviews on top. The BI team no longer has to handle every small request and can focus on the foundation.
The risk is sprawl: hundreds of reports with slightly different calculations, and nobody knows which one is right. Good self-service BI is therefore always self-service within limits: users choose from governed sources and measures, not from raw tables.
Also consider who may publish what. A draft someone makes for themselves is different from a dashboard the whole department sees. A step between draft and publication helps safeguard quality.
Example
A buyer at Acme Groothandel wants to know which suppliers deliver late most often. Instead of submitting a request to the BI team, she builds a bar chart on the approved purchasing source herself and shares it with her team.
Self-service BI in ENABLE
The ENABLE Dashboard Builder is a pilot for self-service BI: users build dashboards with eight chart types on data sources that platform management has approved first, and publish a draft to access profiles. The SQL Explorer also offers plain-language questions on the data warehouse.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What are the benefits of self-service BI?
Users get answers to their questions faster and the BI team has fewer one-off requests to handle. The condition is that everyone works on the same governed data.
What are the risks of self-service BI?
Without limits, many reports appear with different calculations for the same figure. Approved data sources, fixed definitions and a publication step prevent this.
Is Power BI a self-service BI tool?
Yes, Power BI is largely designed for self-service BI, with Power BI Desktop for building and the Power BI service for sharing. How well it works depends on the agreements about data sources and semantic models.
