Power BI, data and AI. Simply explained.
Guides on the topics we work with every day: sharing dashboards securely, row-level security, AI on your own data, data warehouses and the rules around AI. Practical and honest, including about what is not possible.
Power BI
- Power BI 7 minWhat is Power BI Embedded?Power BI Embedded is the way to show Power BI reports and dashboards in your own application, website or portal, instead of in Microsoft's Power BI service. There are two variants: embedding for your organisation, where users sign in with their own Microsoft account, and embedding for your customers, where the application handles access through a service principal and end users do not need a Power BI licence. For that second variant, you need capacity in production.Read the guide
- Power BI 6 minSharing Power BI dashboards securely: the options comparedYou can share a Power BI dashboard in four ways: Publish to web, sharing in the Power BI service (directly or through an app), inviting external users as B2B guest users, or showing the reports in a portal with Power BI Embedded. For colleagues, the Power BI service is usually enough. To share Power BI dashboards securely with customers, suppliers and other external users, guest users or a customer portal are the right choice; Publish to web is public and never suitable for business data.Read the guide
- Power BI 6 minWhat is row-level security (RLS) in Power BI?Row-level security (RLS) in Power BI is a security layer in the semantic model that determines which rows of data a user gets to see. Everyone opens the same report, but a regional manager only sees their own region and a customer only their own orders. You define RLS in roles with DAX filters: static with fixed values, or dynamic based on who is viewing.Read the guide
- Power BI 6 minBuilding a KPI dashboard: step-by-step plan and examplesA KPI dashboard is an overview of the key figures you use to steer towards your goals, such as revenue, margin, on-time delivery or absenteeism. A good KPI dashboard does not start with the software, but with the decisions it needs to support. You then choose a limited number of KPIs, define them, sketch the dashboard and only then build it.Read the guide
AI
- AI 6 minText-to-SQL explained: how to let AI query your databaseText-to-SQL is a technique in which an AI model converts a question in plain language into an SQL query, which is then run on a database. The language model writes the query; the database supplies the figures. How well that works depends mainly on the quality of your metadata and on the safeguards around execution, such as read-only access, timeouts and row limits.Read the guide
- AI 6 minRAG or text-to-SQL: which AI suits your business data?RAG and text-to-SQL are two ways to make AI work with your own data. RAG (retrieval-augmented generation) searches your documents for relevant text passages and lets the model formulate an answer from them; text-to-SQL lets the model write a query on a database, so that the database does the calculating. Use RAG for questions about documents and knowledge, and text-to-SQL for questions about figures.Read the guide
