What is multi-tenant?

Multi-tenant means that one software platform serves several organisations (tenants), with each organisation's data and settings kept separate from the others.

Multi-tenant explained

In a multi-tenant platform, one version of the software runs for all customers. Each customer, a tenant, has its own users, settings and data, and sees nothing of the others. The opposite is single-tenant, where each customer has its own installation.

The advantage is that updates and security improvements reach everyone at the same time and management is more efficient. The flip side is that separation between tenants must be watertight: every database query and every view must know which organisation it belongs to.

With a multi-tenant platform, ask how that separation works, where your organisation's data is stored and whether secrets such as passwords and keys are isolated per tenant.

Example

Acme Groothandel and another wholesaler use the same portal platform. Each has its own portal with its own branding, its own users and its own data warehouse, and an Acme employee cannot see or query anything belonging to the other organisation.

Multi-tenant in ENABLE

ENABLE is a multi-tenant platform: each organisation has its own portal with its own branding, users, dashboards and its own PostgreSQL data warehouse. One account can belong to several organisations, for example for an adviser who works for several customers.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between multi-tenant and single-tenant?

With multi-tenant, several organisations share one installation of the software, with separated data. With single-tenant, each organisation has its own separate installation.

Is multi-tenant software secure?

It can be, if separation between tenants is handled properly in the application and the database. Ask the supplier how that separation works and how secrets are protected per tenant.

What is a tenant?

A tenant is one customer or organisation within a multi-tenant platform, with its own users, settings and data. In Microsoft terms, a tenant is also an organisation's own environment in Microsoft Entra ID.
