Revenue per customer: formula and example.

Revenue per customer is total revenue in a period divided by the number of customers who bought something in that period. It shows how much an average customer is worth and whether customers are buying more or less from you. It is a basis for decisions on account management and customer segmentation.

Revenue per customer formula

Revenue in the period ÷ number of customers with revenue in the period

Worked example

In 2025, Acme Groothandel had revenue of €8,400,000 from 350 customers who placed at least one order. Revenue per customer is €8,400,000 ÷ 350 = €24,000.

How to read this KPI

Rising revenue per customer means customers are buying more on average, for instance through upselling or higher prices. Because large customers have a strong effect on the average, compare it by segment and alongside the median. Also compare it with the previous year and with customer concentration.

Pitfalls with revenue per customer

  • Counting every customer in the database instead of only those with revenue in the period.
  • Not deducting credit notes and cancelled orders from revenue.
  • Relying on an average while a few large customers dominate the picture.

SQL & DAX

Calculating revenue per customer in SQL and DAX

Two examples on a fictitious data warehouse for Acme Groothandel: a PostgreSQL query and a measure for a Power BI model. Adjust table and column names to your own model.

SQL · PostgreSQL
SELECT date_trunc('year', order_date) AS year,
       SUM(total_amount) AS revenue,
       COUNT(DISTINCT customer_id) AS customers,
       ROUND(SUM(total_amount) / NULLIF(COUNT(DISTINCT customer_id), 0), 2) AS revenue_per_customer
FROM orders
WHERE status <> 'cancelled'
GROUP BY 1
ORDER BY 1;
DAX · Power BI
Revenue per Customer =
DIVIDE(
    SUM(Sales[TotalAmount]),
    DISTINCTCOUNT(Sales[CustomerId])
)

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate revenue per customer?

Divide revenue for a period by the number of unique customers who bought something in that period. With €8,400,000 in revenue and 350 customers, that is €24,000 per customer. Use revenue excluding VAT and after credit notes.

What is the difference between revenue per customer and customer lifetime value?

Revenue per customer covers a single period, while customer lifetime value covers the entire relationship with a customer. To get lifetime value, you combine revenue or margin per customer with how long customers stay on average. Revenue per customer is therefore one of the building blocks of lifetime value.

How can you increase revenue per customer?

You increase revenue per customer by selling existing customers more or different products, and by getting them to order more often. Look at which product groups similar customers buy that this customer does not yet. Keep an eye on margin too, not just revenue.
