Carrier share: formula and example.

Carrier share is the percentage of your shipments carried by each carrier in a period. It shows how dependent you are on a single provider and whether the split matches your agreements and rates. Together with cost and performance per carrier, it is the basis for rate negotiations.

Carrier share formula

Shipments per carrier ÷ total shipments × 100%

Worked example

In May 2026 Acme Groothandel sent 3,500 shipments: 2,100 with carrier A, 1,050 with carrier B and 350 with carrier C. Carrier A's share is 2,100 ÷ 3,500 × 100% = 60.0%, B's is 1,050 ÷ 3,500 × 100% = 30.0% and C's is 350 ÷ 3,500 × 100% = 10.0%.

How to read this KPI

A large share with one carrier often brings better rates, but leaves you exposed to disruption, strikes or capacity problems in busy periods. A shift in the split can point to a changing mix of countries or parcel types. Set the share against cost per shipment, on-time delivery and damage rate per carrier.

Pitfalls with carrier share

  • Looking only at counts when rates vary widely by weight and destination.
  • Forgetting volume commitments with a carrier, so a shift leads to higher rates.
  • Adding returns and outbound shipments together.

SQL & DAX

Calculating carrier share in SQL and DAX

Two examples on a fictitious data warehouse for Acme Groothandel: a PostgreSQL query and a measure for a Power BI model. Adjust table and column names to your own model.

SQL · PostgreSQL
SELECT date_trunc('month', shipped_at) AS month,
       carrier,
       COUNT(*) AS shipments,
       ROUND(100.0 * COUNT(*)
             / NULLIF(SUM(COUNT(*)) OVER (PARTITION BY date_trunc('month', shipped_at)), 0), 1) AS share_pct,
       ROUND(SUM(cost) / NULLIF(COUNT(*), 0), 2) AS cost_per_shipment
FROM shipments
WHERE shipped_at IS NOT NULL
GROUP BY 1, 2
ORDER BY 1, shipments DESC;
DAX · Power BI
Carrier Share = DIVIDE(COUNTROWS(Shipments), CALCULATE(COUNTROWS(Shipments), ALL(Shipments[Carrier])))
Cost per Shipment = DIVIDE(SUM(Shipments[Cost]), COUNTROWS(Shipments))

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate carrier share?

Count each carrier's shipments for a period and divide by the total number of shipments. You can do the same on shipping cost or weight if that fits your agreements better. Break it down by country or service if you serve several markets.

How many carriers do you need?

That depends on your volume, destinations and how much a single carrier failing would hurt. Many businesses use one main carrier and one or two alternatives for specific countries, heavy shipments or peaks. Choose based on cost, performance and spreading risk.

How do you choose the right carrier for each shipment?

Compare cost, delivery time, on-time delivery and damage rate by destination and weight band. Turn that into rules, such as which carrier handles heavy parcels or international shipments. Check regularly whether the rules still match measured performance.
