Payment method share: formula and example.

Payment method share is the number (or value) of successful payments made with one method, divided by all successful payments, as a percentage. It shows how your customers prefer to pay. Because each method has its own fees, risks and payout times, the payment mix also affects your margin and cash flow.

Payment method share formula

Successful payments with the method ÷ all successful payments × 100%

Worked example

Acme Groothandel receives 10,000 successful payments in September: 5,800 by online bank payment, 2,100 by credit card, 1,300 through buy now, pay later and 800 on invoice. The shares are 58%, 21%, 13% and 8%, adding up to 100%.

How to read this KPI

Shifts in the payment mix tell you something about your customers, for example more international or business buyers, and about the fees you pay. Compare share by count and by value: methods used more for large orders take a bigger share by value. Set it next to payment failure rate per method to see which methods make customers drop out.

Pitfalls with payment method share

  • Including failed attempts, so methods with lots of outages get too big a share.
  • Looking only at count while fees per method often depend on the amount.
  • Forgetting invoice payments recorded in the accounts because they do not go through the payment provider.

SQL & DAX

Calculating payment method share in SQL and DAX

Two examples on a fictitious data warehouse for Acme Groothandel: a PostgreSQL query and a measure for a Power BI model. Adjust table and column names to your own model.

SQL · PostgreSQL
SELECT method,
       COUNT(*) AS payments,
       SUM(amount) AS amount,
       ROUND(100.0 * COUNT(*) / NULLIF(SUM(COUNT(*)) OVER (), 0), 1) AS share_by_count_pct,
       ROUND(100.0 * SUM(amount) / NULLIF(SUM(SUM(amount)) OVER (), 0), 1) AS share_by_value_pct
FROM payments
WHERE status = 'paid'
  AND created_at >= date_trunc('month', current_date) - interval '1 month'
  AND created_at < date_trunc('month', current_date)
GROUP BY method
ORDER BY payments DESC;
DAX · Power BI
Payment Method Share =
DIVIDE(
    CALCULATE(COUNTROWS(Payments), Payments[status] = "paid"),
    CALCULATE(COUNTROWS(Payments), Payments[status] = "paid", REMOVEFILTERS(Payments[method]))

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate payment method share?

Divide the number of successful payments per method by the total number of successful payments in the same period and multiply by 100%. Do the same by value to see which methods are used for large orders. The shares of all methods add up to 100%.

Which payment methods should an online shop offer?

That depends on your customers and the countries you sell to; consumers and business buyers often pay differently. Look at your own payment mix, at cart abandonment in the payment step and at what customers ask for. Adding a method also brings admin and transaction fees, so weigh those up.

Why does share by count differ from share by value?

Customers do not use the same methods for large and small orders. Business customers, for example, pay large orders on invoice more often, while small consumer orders are more often paid online straight away. As a result, a method's share by value can be much larger or smaller than its share by count.
