First pass yield (FPY): formula and example.

First pass yield (FPY) is the percentage of units that pass through a process right first time, with no rework or scrap. It exposes how much hidden extra work a process contains. Products that end up good after rework do not count towards FPY.

First pass yield (FPY) formula

Units right first time ÷ total units entering the process × 100%

Worked example

In April 2026, 20,000 units went through assembly at Acme Groothandel. Of these, 18,600 were right first time, 900 were good after rework and 500 were scrapped. First pass yield is 18,600 ÷ 20,000 × 100% = 93.0%.

How to read this KPI

A higher FPY means less rework, less waiting and a more predictable process. The gap between FPY and the share of units that end up good shows how much repair work is going on. Compare by product and process step with your own earlier periods; across several steps, multiply the FPY of each step to get rolled throughput yield.

Pitfalls with first pass yield (FPY)

  • Not recording rework done on the shop floor, which inflates FPY.
  • Confusing FPY with the share of good units after rework.
  • Measuring only at final inspection when errors start early in the process.

SQL & DAX

Calculating first pass yield (FPY) in SQL and DAX

Two examples on a fictitious data warehouse for Acme Groothandel: a PostgreSQL query and a measure for a Power BI model. Adjust table and column names to your own model.

SQL · PostgreSQL
SELECT date_trunc('month', finished_at) AS month,
       SUM(good_qty + scrap_qty) AS units_processed,
       SUM(first_pass_qty) AS first_pass_units,
       ROUND(100.0 * SUM(first_pass_qty) / NULLIF(SUM(good_qty + scrap_qty), 0), 1) AS first_pass_yield_pct
FROM production_orders
WHERE finished_at IS NOT NULL
GROUP BY 1
ORDER BY 1;
DAX · Power BI
Units Processed = SUM(Production[GoodQty]) + SUM(Production[ScrapQty])
First Pass Yield = DIVIDE(SUM(Production[FirstPassQty]), [Units Processed])

Plain-language questions

Ask for first pass yield (FPY) per month, customer or product in the SQL Explorer with AI. The AI writes the SQL, you see the query and run it yourself; the AI only receives metadata.

In your Power BI dashboard

Define the KPI as a measure in your Power BI model and show it in the portal, with "Last refreshed" next to it. Access profiles and optional row-level security decide who sees which figures.

Monthly targets

With the built-in Targets app you set a target for the KPI per month, so you see actuals and target side by side.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate first pass yield?

Divide the number of units that passed through the process without rework or scrap by the total number of units that entered it. Multiply by 100 for a percentage. Reworked units are left out of the numerator.

What is the difference between first pass yield and rolled throughput yield?

First pass yield applies to one process step, or to the whole process treated as one step. Rolled throughput yield is the product of the FPY of every step in sequence. Three steps at 95% FPY each give a rolled throughput yield of about 86%.

Why does first pass yield matter if the final product is fine?

Rework costs time, capacity and material, even if the customer never notices. A low FPY makes lead times longer and less predictable. Tracking FPY makes those hidden costs visible.
